  • Integrated DataMind’s assets into PERT’s infrastructure to create a unified set of offerings.
  • Established PERT’s first ever direct sales and sales tracking campaign.
  • Managed a wide variety or research projects, including the completion of a significant validation test of EVA™ (see below) which showed the method’s ability to forecast auto sales to an accuracy level of 90%.

DataMind Research, Sharon, MA – Founder and President, 2002 – 2006.
Founded and led a data analysis and market research firm that delivers high level analytic services to a wide variety of corporate and market research clients. Provided clients with a wide range of statistical services including:

  • Pricing Models
  • Uni and Multivariate Data Analysis
  • Predictive Modeling
  • Market Segmentation and Sizing
  • Time-Series Analysis
  • Neural Net Modeling
  • Conjoint Analysis
  • Customer Targeting and Retention Studies

Sample achievements include:
  • Invention of Expected Value Analysis (EVA™), a revolutionary, patent-pending market research methodology that offers companies, for the first time, a tool to accurately forecast consumer or business purchase patterns for any product or service, in particular “considered purchases” such as durables.
  • Successful sales to top-tier corporate clients such as Avon and Hyundai.
  • Raising $450K from angel and strategic investors.
  • Achieved 30-40% annual revenue growth rates, reaching $0.5MM in sales.

Allez Software, Inc., Lexington, MA – Chief Scientific Officer, June 2001- June 2004.
Senior scientific officer of a privately held biotechnology application and systems development firm, responsible for a wide variety of business and scientific matters including the identification and development of Allez’ bioinformatics product offerings. Sample projects include:

  • Software Development – Led a software development team in design and implementation of a state-of-the-art large scale bioinformatics research and data sharing platform to be used by researchers at the Partner’s Healthcare System in Boston, MA.
  • Sales and Marketing - Led Allez’ sale and marketing efforts both in the informatics and IT sales and support spheres.

PharMetrics, Inc., Watertown, MA -- Senior Scientist, June 1999 – June 2001.
Lead a scientific team in the design and implementation of terabyte level database management tools and high level data analysis systems at PharMetrics, a company that collects and analyzes health care claims records for the pharmaceutical industry. Invented patent pending method for inferring the specialty of a physician listed on a health care claim record based upon an analysis of the physician’s practice patterns. Responsible for establishing a close and full relationship between the sales and marketing staff and the technical/analytic staff . Sample projects include:

  • Database Marketing: Artificial Intelligence – Led a software development team in the design and implementation of highly accurate artificial intelligence systems capable of :
    • Inferring the specialty of a physician listed on a health care claim record based upon an analysis of the physician’s practice patterns. This information is critical to pharmaceutical companies who use it to target health care providers for marketing and sales purposes.
    • Estimating the total enrollment in a health plan based only upon the history of claims submitted by the plan’s members. Health plans measure their business success by determining how much it costs to enroll a member for a month. While the plan’s expenses are usually well known, its enrollment often is not. Helped develop a method that estimated these enrollment figures to greater than 95% accuracy, based solely on the history of the plan’s expenses.
  • PharMetrics has submitted these tools for patent approval and they are currently in use by most major pharmaceutical companies in the US.
  • Database Marketing: Direct Sales Support – As senior scientist was responsible for establishing a close and full relationship between the sales and marketing staff and the technical/analytic staff. Educated the sales and marketing about the structure, content and value of the PharMetrics database, and ensure that they appropriately marketed that information to the firm’s clients. Conversely, was also responsible to ensure that the technical staff understood the needs of the market and focused their research efforts to meet those needs.
  • Database Management -- Developed and implemented a streamlined, SAS based, data management process to collect, clean and process a health care claims database of over half a billion records. The system continuously collects and processes data from over 30 independent health care organizations.

The Klemm Analysis Group, Washington, DC -- Senior Scientist, June 1998 – June 1999.
Responsible for acquisition, development and completion of high level data analysis, data mining and systems development projects for a variety of government and commercial clients, specializing in novel data analysis techniques such as neural networks. Sample projects include:

  • Electric Cable Failure Prediction -- Assisted an electric utility consortium in the development of a cable repair and asset management system for large public utilities. As competition comes to the electric power industry, utilities, faced with losing their monopolies, are beginning to streamline their operations and pay more attention to customer demands. A utility consortium asked us to review their current repair operations and failure histories to develop a cable failure prediction engine that would allow a utility to repair and replace cables before the advent of a catastrophic failure. This prediction engine would form the core of a broader asset management system to be used by a utility.
  • Gas Mixture Prediction -- Developed a highly accurate neural network prediction engine used by a large domestic oil transportation company to predict the mix of gasses passing through their pipelines each day. At the time the company can only inform its customers on a weekly basis the exact nature of the gas mixture in the pipeline. As this information is critical to sales and billing, obtaining accurate daily information is highly valuable. Built and implemented a neural network model that forms the core of a larger process control system instituted by the gas transportation firm. Client licensed models for five years.
  • Health Demographics Analysis – Developed data mining tools for a large health demographics firm, including neural network tools, standard statistical analyses, and data visualization software.

Brandeis University, Waltham, MA -- Senior Scientist, December 1995 – June 1998.
Involved in all scientific and management aspects of designing, building and testing a CCD-based digital camera for x-ray mammography, including hardware and software design and construction, coordination of collaborative relationships, clinical testing at the University of Virginia and Massachusetts General Hospital radiology departments, and publication and presentation of results in scientific journals and conferences. This work included:
  • Development of a neural network based computer aided diagnosis system to automatically detect cancer in digitized mammograms, to be incorporated into a complete digital mammography system.
  • Development and implementation of novel hardware methods for the construction of the digital detector system.
  • Leading the commercialization effort, including development of a business plan, heading negotiations with investors, university officials, potential manufacturers and marketers of the system.

Tufts University, Medford, MA – Adjunct Professor, Winter-Spring, 1996-1997.

Sage Diagnosis, Inc., Palo Alto, CA -- President and Chief Scientist, September 1994 – November, 1995
Founder of silicon valley start-up firm that developed computer algorithms to automatically detect breast cancer in mammograms. Involved in all aspects of business, including business development, software development, and personnel management.

University of California, San Francisco, SF, CA -- Post-Doctoral Fellow, Sept. 1993 - Sept. 1994.
