Nature Source Genetics (naturesourcegenetics.com) is a computational genomics company dedicated to the development and application of new algorithms designed to harness natural genetic variation in the improvement of plant and animal species. Located in Ithaca, New York, NSG scientists interact with a team of distinguished faculty from Cornell University and other major research institutions worldwide in problems related to genetics and genomics. The person hired for this position will work with and support a team of scientists working in the areas of computer science, operations research, statistics, databases, software engineering, quantitative/ population genetics and breeding.

The successful candidate would be expected to take the lead in the development of new solutions/algorithms, as well as participating in all activities of the company. Expertise in genetics and genomics is not required. On-the-job training will be provided.

Qualifications:

  • M.S./Ph.D. degree in: Computer Science, Operations Research, Statistics, Machine Learning, Applied Math or related field.
  • Algorithms: Understanding of basic data structures (e.g., trees and graphs) and basic algorithm design methods (e.g., greedy algorithms, divide & conquer, dynamic programming).
  • Optimization: Understanding of how to set up a Linear Programming problem. Ability to recognize when a problem can be resolved via Linear Programming.
  • Programming: Comfortable writing programs to test research ideas. Willing to learn new programming languages as needed.
  • Statistics: Knowledge of random variables and expectations. Ability to apply statistical reasoning.
  • Beneficial but not required: Experience with hidden Markov models and Markov decision processes; Integer Programming; approximations to NP-hard problems; combinatorial optimization; various statistical tests; maximum likelihood; linear algebra; Bayesian statistics.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group
  • Positive interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with others.

Responsibilities
  • Working with the NSG management team, other NSG employees and the Scientific Advisory Board members in modeling problems in genetics and developing new algorithms and optimization tools.
  • Participating in and/or overseeing software development related to implementation of new algorithms and optimization tools.
  • Preparing scientific reports, publications and presentations that clearly convey progress and challenges, and coordinate activities leading to related scientific publications, presentations, and patent filings.
  • Attending and participating in research planning meetings with other NSG employees, the Scientific Advisory Board, and other scientists (both in academia and the private sector) related to various NSG projects.
