Minerals Down Under (MDU) is a multidivisional program which aims to identify and solve scientific and technical challenges that inhibit the future competitiveness of Australia's resource industry. A major MDU activity uses CSIRO's HyLoggerTM technology to collect and then analyse tens of thousands of reflectance spectra from drill hole cores; see www.csiro.au/org/HyLoggingSystemsGroup.html . The spectral analyses enable mapping of minerals down and across drill holes, which is important for both exploration and mining purposes. MDU is developing sophisticated algorithms to determine the likely mineral composition of samples from the spectra produced by the HyLoggerTM instruments. This involves characterisation of complex spectra, integration of one- and two-dimensional spatial information and incorporation of prior information. After testing, algorithms are implemented in efficient C code for use by CSIRO scientists and customers. Novel algorithms are usually published.

We are seeking to appoint a statistician/scientific programmer to our Sydney office, who will participate in both the development and implementation of the algorithms. The position provides an opportunity for applicants who are interested in developing and applying sophisticated statistical methodologies to solve challenging problems of importance to Australia's future. The position would be of particular interest to individuals seeking to obtain a real world perspective prior to commencing a PhD.
