Business Analyst Senior (Atlanta, GA)

Works as a liaison among stakeholders in order to elicit, analyze, communicate and validate requirements for changes to business processes, policies and information systems. Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates business systems and user needs. Formulates systems to parallel overall business strategies. Writes detailed description of user needs, program functions, and steps required to develop or modify computer programs. Requires a bachelor’s degree in an area of specialty and 6-8 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. May lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Understands business problems and opportunities in the context of the requirements and recommends solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.

Role Responsibilities (Specific)

  • Work with the project sponsor and/or project manager to document project business requirements and project solution vision and scope.
  • Identify project stakeholders and user classes. Document user class characteristics. Identify appropriate representatives for each user class and negotiate their responsibilities.
  • Elicit requirements using interviews, document analysis, requirements workshops, storyboards, surveys, site visits, business process descriptions, use cases, scenarios, event lists, business analysis, competitive product analysis, and/or task and workflow analysis.
  • Decompose high-level business and user requirements into functional and non-functional requirements, specified to a level of detail appropriate for use by those who must base their work on the requirements.
  • Write requirements specifications according to standard templates, using concise and unambiguous structured natural language.
  • Represent requirements using alternative views, such as analysis models (diagrams), prototypes, or scenarios, where appropriate.
  • Participate in peer reviews and inspections of requirements documents.
  • Lead requirements analysis and validation, ensuring that requirement statements are correct, complete, consistent, concise, comprehensible, traceable, feasible, unambiguous, and verifiable, and that they conform to organizational standards.
  • Participate in requirements prioritization.
  • Participate in peer reviews of work products derived from requirements specifications to ensure that the requirements were interpreted correctly.
  • Enter, manipulate, and report on requirements stored in a commercial requirements management tool. Understand requirement attributes and facilitate their use throughout the project.
  • Manage requirements traceability information and track requirements status throughout the project.
  • Manage changes to baselined requirements through effective application of change control processes and tools.
  • Assist in identifying, establishing and implementing effective requirements practices, including use, promotion and continuous improvement of the organization’s requirements engineering policies, procedures, and tools.
  • Assist with the development of methods to reuse requirements across projects.
  • Assist with the development of methods to assist project management in project planning through requirements development and analysis.
  • Understand business problems and opportunities in the context of requirements and recommend solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.

Knowledge Needed (Specific)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Analysis, Information Management, or a related area of specialization
  • 6-8 years of field experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Analysis, Information Management, or a related area of specialization
  • An understanding of contemporary requirements elicitation, analysis, specification, validation, and management practices, and the ability to apply them in the context of an active project
  • An understanding of how to practice requirements engineering according to the specific software development life cycle approach practiced in a given environment
  • An understanding of project management concepts and how business processes and information systems are positioned and developed
  • Familiarity with requirements engineering systems (such as CaliberRM) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with organizational requirements engineering books and resources is a plus.
  • Business or application domain knowledge is a plus

  • Listening skills, to understand what people say and to detect what they might be hesitant to say
  • Analytical skills, to critically evaluate the information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose high-level information into details, abstract up from low-level information to a more general understanding, distinguish presented user requests from the underlying true needs, and distinguish solution ideas from requirements
  • Facilitation skills, to lead requirements elicitation workshops
  • Observational skills, to validate data obtained via other techniques and expose new areas for elicitation
  • Writing skills, to communicate information effectively to customers, managers, and technical staff
  • Organizational skills, to work with the vast array of information gathered during elicitation and analysis and to cope with rapidly changing information
  • Interpersonal skills, to help manage expectations, negotiate priorities and to resolve conflicts among project stakeholders (such as customers, project management, and engineering)
  • Modeling skills, to represent requirements information in graphical forms that augment natural language textual representations, including using modeling languages that may already be established in the development organization
  • Continuing education attitude to remain up-to-date on changing technologies
